We Asked, and God Answered: A Story of Faith, Partnership, and Transformation
As we prepared to leave Haiti after our first visit together, we found ourselves standing beside a river that flowed through the village we had spent days exploring. The needs were overwhelming, but what stirred our hearts most was not what was lacking. It was what God seemed to be revealing.
There, by the riverbank, we stopped and prayed.
We asked God to show us what to do next. We believed He had brought specific challenges and opportunities to our attention for a reason. As we reflected on all we had seen, one thing became clear: neither Africans nor Americans could accomplish this work alone. God was calling us to walk together in partnership.
What we did not know at the time was that the very place where we prayed stood beside a church that would become a beacon of hope for the entire region. God was already at work.
Our next step was to identify local churches that carried a genuine burden for their communities and a desire to see lasting change. We were not looking for churches that simply wanted outside assistance. We were looking for churches willing to lead transformation from within.
Over the next three and a half years, we witnessed something remarkable. Communities began to change. Local development initiatives took root and flourished. Families experienced new opportunities. Most importantly, people encountered the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
The change was not merely physical or economic. It was spiritual.
The local church became the driving force behind the work, and because the projects were grounded in biblical principles and owned by the community, they continued long after they began. What emerged was a model of transformational development sustained by faith, leadership, and local ownership.
Hebrews 11:1 reminds us, "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen."
That verse perfectly describes the journey. We stepped forward not because we had all the answers, but because we trusted that God did. Our confidence was never in our strategies or experience. Our hope rested in God's love for the Haitian people and His ability to accomplish what only He can do.
And He did.
The success of that first project was not the result of our efforts alone. It was the result of God working through local churches that chose to become the hands and feet of Christ in their communities. The transformation we witnessed was evidence of what happens when believers seek God's direction and faithfully follow His lead.
Over the years, we have partnered together in communities around the world. Time and again, we have seen the same biblical principles produce lasting fruit. Through prayer, partnership, and a commitment to empowering local churches, God has brought hope, dignity, and transformation to communities facing deep challenges.
These experiences have shaped the principles we share in Teach a Man to Fish. They have taught us that lasting transformation begins when God's people seek His wisdom, trust His leadership, and work together to advance His Kingdom.
